A Beginner’s Guide to Building a Natural Makeup Bag

Whether you’re looking to add to your existing collection or start afresh, expanding your makeup bag or transitioning from conventional to more natural products can be a daunting task. With all the choice out there, it can sometimes feel like a shot in the dark deciding which product to buy, so in order to help prevent decision fatigue we’ve put together a beginners guide to our essential favourites for building a natural makeup bag.

We’re big fans of keeping things simple, so something like Jane Iredale’s Purepressed Base is a perfect everyday go-to. A four-in-one product, it acts as a concealer, foundation, powder and sun protection (SPF 20). Free from synthetic chemicals, this power gives skincare benefits as well as great coverage, and can be layered up to seven times on the skin. When used with the organic Hydration Spray, the minerals melt into the skin leaving a flawless yet natural (and not powdery) finish.

One of our favourite products for bringing colour to the face is another multi-purpose wonder called Lip2Cheek from RMS Beauty. With a coconut oil base, these little pots add a flush of natural colour to the cheeks and a pop of pigment to the lips. The colour is buildable, so you can go from a sheer hint of colour to a bolder look, and they’re super easy to apply with your finger tips. Coconut oil doesn’t harbour bacteria so you don’t to worry about germs, and the formula also includes other nourishing ingredients like jojoba seed oil and cacao seed butter. Two of our favourite shades are Promise, a warm salmon-pink with a very subtle golden undertone, and Demure which is a soft rose with a hint of mauve.

Arguably one of the tricker things to nail when it comes to natural and organic beauty, we’re pretty proud of our collection of natural mascaras. If you’re after volume, length and longevity, Jane Iredale’s Longest Lash mascara in Black Ice gives high impact lashes without lacquers, shellac or petroleum-based ingredients. One of our other favourites is from Ilia Beauty - for something a little different their long-wearing mascara in the shade Asphalt Jungle is a charcoal grey with blue undertones.

Nothing says “I’ve had 8 hours sleep and 2 litres of water” like a bit of well-placed dewy highlighter. RMS Beauty does lit-from-within-glow like no one else - their original best selling Living Luminizer gives a sheer pearly finish with a moon-like opalescence. Their other cult product the Master Mixer is a rose gold highlighter that adds a warm glow to the skin. We recommend applying product to the high points of the face and anywhere you want to catch the light - cheekbones, inner eye corner, cupid’s bow, even eyelids and tip of the nose.
